The English word poodle comes from the German "pudel" or "pudelin," which means to splash in the water. The expression "French Poodle" appeared much later, when the breed gained tremendous popularity in France.As it is obvious from the meaning of its name, the Poodle originated as a water retriever. The unclipped Poodle bears some resemblance to the old Rough-haired Water Dog of England. All of the Poodle's ancestors were good swimmers. The Standard Poodle is the oldest of the three varieties existing nowadays. The smaller types were developed after the Standard variety was well established. The Toy variety was known in England in the 18th century. The Toy Poodle was a sleeve dog. Queen Anne admired performing Toy Poodles, who danced to the music just in a human manner. A short walk or some play in the park will meet the Toy Poodle's daily needs. The tiniest of the Poodles is a very intelligent and active dog. These dogs will fit into the small accommodation provided the owner properly exercises the pet. However, irrespective of their miniature size, Toy Poodles should be treated with respect and care.
